Cosmological Simulations of X-ray Clusters: The Quest for Higher Resolution and Essential Physics
نویسنده
چکیده
I review cosmological simulations of X-ray clusters. Simulations have increased in resolution dramatically and the effects of radiative cooling, star formation feedback, and chemical enrichment on the ICM are being simulated. The structure and evolution of non-radiatve X-ray clusters is now well characterized. Such models fail to reproduce the observed Lx − T relation, implying the need for additional physics. Simulations adding radiative cooling produce too much cool gas and unreasonably high X-ray luminosities. Simulations including star formation and feedback appear more promising, but need further refinement. New observations should help in this regard.

CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES: Probes of Cosmological Structure and Galaxy Evolution
Clusters of galaxies emerge as nodes in the gravitationally evolving cosmic web of dark matter and baryons that defines the large-scale structure of the Universe. X-ray and optical observations offer plentiful evidence of clusters’ dynamical youth, yet bulk measures derived from these observations are tightly correlated, indicating a high degree of structural regularity that makes the populatio...
متن کاملGalaxy orbits and the intracluster gas temperature in clusters
In this paper we examine how well galaxies and intra-cluster gas trace the gravitational potential of clusters. Utilizing mass profiles derived from gravitational lensing and X-ray observations, coupled with measured galaxy velocities, we solve for the velocity anisotropy parameter βorb(r) using the anisotropic Jeans equation. This is done for five clusters, three at low redshift: A2199, A496 a...
متن کاملStudy of Galaxy Cluster Properties from High-resolution Sph Simulations
We present some of the results of an ongoing collaboration to sudy the dynamical properties of galaxy clusters by means of high resolution adiabatic SPH cosmological simulations. Results from our numerical clusters have been tested against analytical models often used in X-ray observations: β model (isothermal and polytropic) and those based on universal dark matter profiles. We find a universa...
متن کاملDetermining Distances to Clusters of Galaxies Using Resonant X-ray Emission Lines
Bright clusters of galaxies can be seen out to cosmological distances, and thus they can be used to derive cosmological parameters. Although the continuum X-ray emission from the intra-cluster gas is optically thin, the optical depth of resonant lines of ions of heavy elements can be larger than unity. In this Letter we study the feasibility of deriving distances to clusters of galaxies by dete...
متن کاملCosmological SPH simulations with four million particles : statistical properties of X - ray clusters in a low - density universe
We present results from a series of cosmological SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) simulations coupled with the PM (Particle–Particle–Particle–Mesh) solver for the gravitational force. The simulations are designed to predict the statistical properties of X-ray clusters of galaxies as well as to study the formation of galaxies. We have seven simulation runs with different assumptions on the ...
